IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is a globally recognized and standardized English Proficiency Test. It assesses English language skills across four key areas: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Recognized by over 9000 universities worldwide, IELTS offers two main modules: Academic and General Training. The Academic Module is necessary for test takers intending to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies, while the General Training Module is typically required for those seeking vocational education opportunities or planning to immigrate.
The IELTS test format is divided into 6 sections as follows:
40 questions to be answered in 40 minutes.
3 passages (40 questions) to be answered in 60 minutes.
3 sections (40 questions) to be answered in 60 minutes.
2 tasks (Diagram Prompt/Argument Prompt) to be answered in 60 minutes.
2 tasks (Letter Prompt/Essay Prompt) in 60 minutes.
3 parts in 11 to 15 minutes. The total duration of the entire test format is 2 hours 45 minutes.
Comprising 4 sections and a total of 40 questions, the listening section spans 40 minutes, inclusive of a 10-minute transfer period for recording answers onto the main answer sheet.
The reading component presents 3 passages with a total of 40 questions. Candidates have one hour to complete this section.
This module involves 2 writing tasks. Task 1 focuses on report writing, explaining diagrams and charts, with a minimum of 150 words advised and a recommended time allocation of 20 minutes. Task 2 entails an argumentative essay, requiring a minimum of 250 words and a suggested 40-minute timeframe. The total time allotted for writing is 1 hour.
Similar to the Academic Module, this module comprises 2 writing tasks. Task 1 presents a Letter Prompt, formal or informal, with a minimum word count of 150. Task 2 mirrors that of the Academic Module.
Consisting of 3 parts, the speaking section extends for 11-14 minutes and is conducted one-on-one with the student, typically on a separate day.
The examiner poses general questions to the student, pertaining to their work, studies, hobbies, etc. This segment lasts between 4 and 5 minutes.
For this part, the candidate is provided with a topic on a task card and is required to speak for at least 1 minute, with one minute provided for brainstorming and note-taking. This segment spans between 3 and 4 minutes.
Part 3 involves a two-way discussion with the examiner, focusing mostly on the topic from Part 2. The discussion lasts between 4 and 5 minutes.
Once the test is concluded, the individual receives their scores. Following this, our classroom training commences. We utilize the Cambridge IELTS Book, an official publication for IELTS, during our classroom sessions. In the Listening section, the test is initially played without interruptions, and students answer the questions as they listen. Afterward, the answers are provided, focusing on spelling, writing conventions, and the marking scheme. Subsequently, the same test is replayed, pausing at each answer to explain it to the students. This process ensures thorough practice across four tests.
For the Reading section, our instructors elaborate on various question types and elucidate the approach to answering them. Typically, passages are assigned after an introductory discussion, and students are tasked with completing them. Towards the end of each test, questions are reviewed with the students, and answers are explained, completing four tests in this manner. Discussion forms an integral component of our reading sessions. In the writing section, students are first briefed on task types along with essay-writing guidelines.
Students engage in practicing four essays of task 1 type and four essays of task 2 type. Each essay undergoes assessment, and guidelines are offered for improvement. In the speaking section, one-on-one sessions are conducted mirroring the test format, followed by discussions on the answers. Scores are provided along with guidance for score enhancement. Following classroom sessions, mock tests are administered to simulate test conditions, with scores assigned for each mock test.
